idk if bytecoin will take off but there is a reasonable chance that a series of carbon copies of bitcoin will be used to solve the scalability problem and it would appear that bytecoin is the first in line. I think its a hell of a long shot but a good bet if you are into lottery ticket type investments =)
Scalability problem?
And frankly, I personally think a carbon copy coin is a wasted effort. Why not roll in some changes to tackle a few issues bitcoin is currently facing? And what's to stop each user on this forum from just creating their own coin and flooding the world with hundreds of copycat branches?
The fact that everyone would have to use a thousand different clients to accept Stevecoins and Billcoins and Joecoins. It's not such a big deal right now, as you could probably count all the altcoins on both hands, but after a certain point in time, altcoins won't gain traction because the top, say, 10 altcoins, are already good enough, and the 100th, unless it brings something remarkable to the table, will go unnoticed.
But literally nothing is stopping anyone, to answer the question. The question is, is it worth it? Most people don't think Bytecoin is worth it, and thus, they don't adopt it, don't install the client, and without people accepting Bytecoin, it doesn't do much. The natural order of any commodity, I think.
