Dog people and cat people are different. Some prefer independent friends as pets while others prefer sycophantic toadies.

Edit: Both cats and dogs become family members. Their loss can be devastating. The longer one's relationship with a pet and the younger the human is, the harder it is. When a pet one has had since early childhood passes away, it's almost like being orphaned. By the time one is elderly, chances are that you've had several pets come and go but it's still a sad event.

I've lost a couple of cats in my life. And it was devastating. I'm dreading the day it happens again.
Ironically, life wouldn't be so precious without death.
