Are slush's pool and bitpenny the only 2 pools open to public right now ? I did a few searches and only uncovered a few older pools that ran for a bit then subsequently died. Huh

Pretty much, some people are working to bring others up. But for now, its pretty much just slush's and bitpenny.

Those are the most efficient mining cards. Miners will be buying them wherever they can find them, not selling them.

I don't think people will suddenly sell their mining hardware in the near future. There will be less people buying hardware just for mining though. With less people investing in hardware difficulty increases should slow.

I think you've got this backwards.

If the BTC exchange rate rises it makes 5970's more valuable in fiat dollars, which is what they are costed on when manufactured and market basis for sale (generally).

Think of it as the ratio of BTC a 5970 card can mine to the cost of the card in BTC ... it could asymptote to a constant over time, including a base electricity rate.

I'm paying some acquaintances to mine bitcoins for me on their video cards, but they don't know that's what they are doing. I'm paying them about double their electricity costs, and they think it's a great deal.

Being a greedy b*st*rd, I don't want them to discover bitcoins and start mining for themselves. I've managed to obfuscate the code well enough, but I am worried that someday one of them will look at the network traffic and see the connection to mining.bitcoin.cz and then abandon me to mine on their own. Then my greedy little scheme will be over!

I asked slush if I could pay him to give me an alternate access point on a server that didn't say "bitcoin" in the name, but he wasn't interested.

If anyone else can set some kind of relay between my workers and slush's server, I'd be interested in paying you to use it. I could use as many as three different servers doing this for me (for redundancy in case one goes down), and I'd pay $10/month apiece in bitcoins. PM me if you think you can help me out. I'll update this post once I have three servers and don't need further help.

Please don't mention your server name in this thread, as that would kind of defeat the purpose of keeping the server name unassociated with bitcoins.

Well, I see no reason why I should provide "obfuscated pool" for users. This is Bitcoin service, I did it to help Bitcoin users and I'm interested in spreading Bitcoin between people. So I want to say that I disagree with stuff you're doing. Please, at least discuss those obfuscating techniques outside this thread

You can use numeric IP, or CNAME as you have advised here. Or a proxy, like this: http://bt.irlbtc.com/view/2431

I understand. I hope I didn't offend anybody. I am very open with my workers about what I will pay them and what they must do, and they seem very happy with the deal. I wish to point out that bitcoin rewards people who can find ways to mine more efficiently, and I'm responding to that incentive.

LOL... Dude, I don't think you really need to worry about it. They'd almost certainly rather have the cash, no need to sneak around.

Hell, even as someone already interested in BTC, I would take¹ ... (crunches the numbers) ... USD$800/year/5870 to run a miner or ten for anyone interested. In fact, make it twenty, and I'll give you a discount for effectively paying for my home heating. Grin

As for the ethics here - I really don't see a problem. You offered to more than fairly compensate people to run a program for you. If they don't insist on knowing what it does before agreeing, not your problem. Not like it does anything illegal, like act as a CP FTP site without them knowing or a spam bot or anything like that.

1) Serious offer, if you want it - Minimum six month commitment, payable in advance (since I currently own zero 5870 cards)
