Would you rather have a cert that may or may not be signed somewhere along the chain by someone you don't trust?
I choose self signed certs for your protection
But if you think customers would prefer a verisign signed cert, I'd be more than willing to make sure it happens.
If you get the certificate signed using a CSR you don't need to share your private key.
I'm good with it, but most users won't even know how to bypass the warning when they click the checkout button and get the SSL warning.
Myself, I use StartSSL, which is free. I only give them the CSR to sign, not the private keys, which are created safely on my own computer.
