    So If I have a wallet that all I want to do with is receive BTC for safe keeping .... Can I just copy the data folder to a thumb drive (make another one for backup) and send all my BTC to that addresss ?

    The question is do I need to plug that thumb drive back in and "update" the wallet every once in a while or will the network track it for ever and there isn't any need for me to even take it out of the safe ?

    Good question.  But for me the only true way to verify if someone has successfully sent me bitcoins due is to see the transactions in my wallet.

    You can look up your address in Block Explorer.

    You can use http://blockexplorer.com to look up your address to verify the bitcoins made it.
