The specific reason ZET took off and the reason people like it is because it's not merged-mined.

I solo-mine, but it depends on the total amount of hashing power you have. With just one BE you are better off joining a pool.

I am still struggling to connect .... are other people still having problems as some miners do seem to be active on the pool?

Yes, that P2Pool node is fine to mine at.
