    With the recent crack of the PlayStation 3's DRM, it's only a matter of time before botnet code emerges to take advantage of the console's sweet GPU for distributed bitcoin mining.

    It has a 550 MHz Nvidia "Reality Synthesizer" GPU.  If experience from the mining community is any guide, it's probably vastly inferior to current and previous generation ATI GPUs for integer hashing operations.  On the other hand, if there are legions of 12-to-25-year-old gamers living at home and more than willing to burn their parents' electricity, it could strengthen the network considerably.

    thats the idea - It would be attached to a distributed or co operative mining server. My ps3 is on all day as it is our entertainment hub. So performing bitcoin mining wouldnt add much more cost in fact it would be using the wasted electricity from when its idle.

    As was already said, current ATI cards will be totally superior over any console.
    It's almost 3 Tflops after all... No console today can offer this computational power. And the price/power ratio is extremely good (for ATI) as well.

    The PS3 GPU isn't very powerful, but what about the Cell processor ? I believe you can use OpenCL programs on it, and it's very good for some applications.

    I don't have access to a PS3 myself so can't tamper with it, but I'd also be way more interested in seeing what the Cell/BBE could do than a ancient nvidia card. Probably not enough to work as a miner, but I'd like to see how it compares to newer x86 cores. Might be fair hashes/watt ratio?

    Quick estimate for Cell:
    7 SPE SIMDs + PPE AltiVec, each doing 4*32-bit ops/cycle.
    PS3 cell is clocked @ 3.2GHz.
    bitcoinhash is ~6350 cycles without native rotate.
    8 * 4 * 3.2G 6350 -> about 16M hash/s.
    About on par with a hexcore K10.

    I get slightly over 17Mhash/s per socket from AMD Opteron 6128s, 8x2GHz. So that sounds pretty fair. TDP? ~50W?
