In December, Chinese authorities seized nearly 7,000 crypto mining machines, illegally consuming electric power.
The confiscation came as part of an inspection of more than 70,000 households, 3,061 merchants, 1,470 communities, as well as factories, mines, courtyards and villages in the Kaiping District of Tangshan city.
Talking bout efficiency...
So they raided 20 homes and a merchant for every 2 mining machines they've found, not even counting factories or mines.
This way they will have to raid all of China and still not get their hand of half of the mining gear there.
Currently, china uses a lot of coal to generate electricity, which is not the most efficient way and has a huge impact too. If people used better sources of electricity like solar panels, hydro-mining etc.. We can definetely reduce the harm that Bitcoin is causing nowadays. Finally,I think that's the way we should think, don't expect Bitcoin to stop using PoW as consensus overnight, it's not going to happen. You'd better be looking after Green coins rather than expecting a change in Bitcoin's consensus

No, coal if actually damn efficient, that's why power cost in China is that cheap.
Good old coal is dirt cheap and coal power plants are easy to be built and maintained, the only drawback is that you can't make it environment friendly without large investments.
But in terms of pure costs, nothing beats coal and nuclear.
Without government subsidies, solar and wind would stand no chance.
