Its hard to determine how people actually become addicted. Some way its usually beginners luck which gets people addicted, where they win a large sum of money, and they find it easy and decide to do it again and find it difficult. And they keep trying over and over and it gets out of hand.
Others say its due to people not being able to control their emotions. Which is what we find in dice or trading stocks. People take a bet or trade and when they win a small amount they are happy. But when they lose, they say they will keep playing until break-even. And eventually their trades or bets are very large and what was once a small loss ends up blowing up their entire accounts. And this is why it becomes addictive to those individuals.

Yes, I do agree, in the beginning, we really don't know if we are into gambling addiction already. As usually there is this denial stage until it's too late. I admit that before, I didn't recognized the signs and symptoms as everyone in my circle are gamblers, including my wife. But when I lost my job and there was no money, that's when the time I realized that my priorities are wrong.
So when I got back, I change everything, I still gamble, but not like before. From time to time I will go online and play. Or go out with friends and families to play in land base casinos but that's it. No more returning back to my old self.
