I partly agree. But the "uneducated" part was probably not this woman's fault. You can't blame people to not be a financial expert, and much less this generation, who probably didn't have exposure to the "modern financial world" in their whole educational carreer.
I totally agree - not everyone shares the same interests, and we're talking about a 72-year-old granny here. Bitcoin got more popular about 10 years ago, but by then, she was probably already retired and just busy living her retirement life. Thats exactly why scammers target people like her, they know most folks in that age group aren't into technology but are looking for solid investments to help out their familys finances.
The problem is that these stories are those who will enrage people about Bitcoin (even if their rage should be directed more against the more dubious parts of the "crypto industry" and most altcoins) and call for "more regulation" or even bans.
People who lack education will jump to conclusions like that. But if they really understood, they'd know it's not Bitcoin thats the scam - its just that scammers use Bitcoin because its popular. This is pretty common in our country too, but like I said, lack of education leads people to make the wrong judgment.
I'm not a friend of the intromission of the state, but I would advocate for schools to delve much more into financial education, clearly exposing scams and differentiating them from cryptocurrency (and of course other forms of legit investments). Perhaps the crypto community could also be more active, for example dedicating a section on Bitcoin.org to scam detection. At least in countries with low state involvement into adult education the local Bitcoin organizations and NGOs could offer material (e.g. educational websites) and maybe even courses.
Bitcoin's in the top 10 global assets now, so it's about time people get educated on it. It should even be part of the school curriculum, so the younger generation can help teach their grandparents. You know, education starts at home, and maybe it's time for the young ones to be the ones educating the older ones about this stuff.
