That thought crossed my mind in the last few days too.

This is the time to remind people that its not enough to own a hardware wallet and
backup the seed its essential to backup in a way which preserves the seed through
fire and water and the best material is Marine grade Stainless Steel or Titanium.

In terms of Stainless, Marine grade protects against water and corrosion and the
thickness I would expect would determine how quickly is succumbs to fire
and heat exposure.

All my DIY plates are between 4 and 6mm thick.

Of everything I own the most important thing is Bitcoin Seeds, Property should
be insured, documents can be replaced etc.

You can store your seed phrase with washers, metal, or good old fashioned paper, but the most important thing is to keep them private and have backups in different locations. Pretty much all the houses destroyed by the fire were single-family homes, considering that the houses in the US are built using cheap wood and California especially is extremely prone to fires I hope two things: 1) people would get a fire-proof safe 2) if you were home at the evacuation moment you would probably get your cold wallet together with your wallet, cash, IDs, etc.

That's a good point. Using more resistant medium for storing coins is one way but if you have to leave home and run away, it will still be left behind and in the ruins in the aftermath you may not be able to find it. Not to mention that with crime rates rising, it may be stolen! (they've already deployed the National Guard to try and prevent some of the lootings).

So a better idea is to have an emergency plan where you can quickly take valuable "objects" with you in case of a disaster where you have to quickly evacuate. It could be albums, a hard drive, documents, etc. and of course your paper wallet.
Keeping a backup in a different location is helpful as well. This is where the importance of encryption is highlighted.

When I first saw the thread title of op, I was at some point hoping to see op give some thumbs up to people who already have bitcoin somewhere but the reverse is the case.
Op, it’s worth saying that, no one wants a natural disaster and I’m sure not this very wildfire as I believe nobody would have been expecting such a disaster and as such, both humans and properties will be definitely affected.
At this point, we shouldn’t be bothered about assets loss but rather be discussed on the lives that were affected and what then is the use of all the holdings when the holder is no more and the asset can’t be recovered ?

Regardless of which ever method we choose to store our cooks, there are always possibilities that anything can happen at anytime and the case with the wildfire is a typical example.

Metal plates engraved with seeds are likely a pretty good solution, but you'll probably have to deal with the prospect of your house being buried under a huge rubble and being unable to find a small piece of metal in the middle. People with significant holdings are more likely to store them in several locations with a reasonable geographical distance apart.

That, or just invest in a sturdy and fireproof safe that can withstand high temperatures. They likely have several things that they would like to protect anyways.

I do agree with what most of the posters have said,

1. back up your seed in another location, it's your call where you are going to put it
2. invest on a metal steel plate as this is one of the best way to back up your seed, however, you should be the first one to be at your home if everything is clear and find it. Otherwise, if someone saw it and has a idea what it is, that person could steal your metal plate and sweep your Bitcoin

Man, I didn't thought of that. But there is a huge possibility that those affected ones saved first their private keys or wherever it is written or carved. I've watched several interviews and content near into that area and I've heard many of them say about Bitcoin so, there's really the chance that many of them are investors, early and new. And I hope that most of them saved their precious mnemonic phrases if ever they've foreseen that their neighborhood was going to be affected by that wildfire.
