If by taking "your investement to another level" means you're going to be investing more as well, then a hardware wallet is definitely what you should go for here.

Now I'm assuming what you mean by "even my wife and children" can access is after you pass away, or in case of an emergency? If the meaning is that you want them to have access at all times, and use the wallet, then I'm not sure a hardware wallet is what you want here. Not if they'll be spending from it on a regular basis.

I'll recommend you go for a cold storage like Trezor.. or setting up an air gapped device using an old PC plus electrum to store your coins offline and away from the Internet. Don't bother storing your funds on centralized platforms as you should remember not your keys not your coins. They literally would give you a digit of your balance but they indirectly own your coins. Paper wallet is good but old and if not properly store might be lost to damage..

about sharing your BTC holding with family..Though it would get to a point where you have to tell someone you trust about your BTC holdings, for now I'll advice you keep it to your self for security reasons. Even though you trust your family so well, you can tell just your wife so she would be aware of such assets..

A hardware wallet is the best on your list because it's Airgapped, good to store large funds and for long-term hodli. If you have an old PC, you can also try electrum cold storage wallet. You generate your keys on an airgapped device. i.e you don't connect the PC to the internet and create a watch only wallet to sign, broadcast and track your transaction.

This is not about the wallet that you are using, it is about your seed phrase which is used to access your coins. Make sure you protect the seed phrase.

About wallets, the safest are paper wallet if you operate it offline, and wallet on airgapped devices. Next are reputed hardware wallets which are also secure.

Centralized exchanges are not reliable. Not your key not your coin.

Start it with wallets like Electrum[1]. That's a good start for you while you're still thinking about which wallet you'll use together with your family. But we highly advise everyone to buy their very first hardware wallet. Do not forget to download the wallets that you are decided to use from their official websites. And if you can't still think of it, you have various choices[2].

the electrum wallet is showing me disconnected,how can I connect it?

As a Bitcoin wallet I would definitely prefer Electrum. You can also teach your family how to use it, so they will know how to access the coins when you're not around. If you're not investing in altcoins, Electrum would be sufficient as a Bitcoin wallet. A hardware wallet is not an absolute necessity. Don't forget to back up your Electrum wallet to a flash drive or a hard disk. Don't leave your funds on central exchanges, as there's no secure side to that. In the long term, you most likely won't have access to that money.

for me personally, hardware wallet for sending BTC, or anything related to on chain activity.
paper wallet is for when you just want to store your BTC but want it to not be connected to internet to ensure security that it won't get leaked.

because even hardware wallet might have vulnerability, if i remember correctly certain hardware wallet gives feature to back up seed phrase in their cloud storage which just seems weird to me, we basically giving password to stranger to access our asset.
but honestly, even with desktop wallet, it already suffice.

Lifetime? It's tricky since you want to consider durability and whether you can spend those easily in the future. At very least,
1. Avoid centralized exchange since they may be hacked, close their business, perform exit scam or doing shady stuff (e.g. charging fee for idle fund).
2. Whether you choose software, hardware or paper wallet, make sure to write very detailed guide and make multiple backup (including the guide).

Although looking at past decade, Bitcoin Core and Electrum may be good choice since they still active in development and have good backward compatibility.
