Regarding anger-driven development, it may be possible that this would then indeed lead to the solution Todd outlined to detect unspendable keys, which would cripple Bitcoin seriously. And that's what we should avoid, I think...

BTW, this "Non standard token" is hilarious. Exactly what we need: more incentives for miners to offer process non-standard txes for bribes. (The PR would fix a big part of this problem.)

If one or more of the various 'fixes' to the extra-destructive spam problems were rolled out, it would actually be quite handy to have an 'escape valve' (e.g., OP_RETURN).  If anyone is actually making money by spamming, they would potentially NOT become a desperate cornered beast if they could potentially just switch over.

Similarly, if the user-base chose to apply their 'fuck with them' budget (filters, preferences, out-of-band rewards, etc) it would probably be cheaper and more effective to do so when the offenders have a practical escape route.

The fact that Bitcoin is on the winning side by realizing a relatively high 'bang for the buck' when people use OP_RETURN is something of an icing on the cake in a environments as described above.

    My thoughts on the matter.

sig spam anywhere and self-moderated threads on the pol&soc board are for losers.
