Have you forgotten the pandemic and everything that happened after it? We can discuss how much less or more bad it was than the great recession you mention, but I think that the pandemic and all its consequences was one of the biggest challenges humanity has faced in the last few decades.
As I understand it, Covid has caused a big shock to the economy but not a severe recession like the great recession of 2008. The economy recovered very quickly because the government intervened promptly by pumping money, and that's why bitcoin skyrocketed during covid. But before that, bitcoin was also dumped and only grew strongly when the government decided to pump money to save the economy, and not only bitcoin, stocks also reacted similarly.
And as far as I know, economic recession does not mean that the government will have to pump money, pumping money or tightening will depend on the cause and the economic situation at that time. That's why i say bitcoin never experienced a real recession and what would happen to it if the government didnt pump money?
Let's take an example if you invested in BTC on the day of the declaration of the pandemic when the price dropped by 50% and was only around $5000, today you would have x20 profit and you wouldn't have written what you wrote, right?
Bitcoin has proven to be a very good hedge against inflation so far, but it is not for those who think the price should only go up and never down. Such people should perhaps only invest in gold and similar things that have a relatively stable price with small drops and moderate growth.
I never said that bitcoin is not a good long term investment, it is even the best investment because it can generate bigger returns than other investments. But we are just talking about what kind of asset will protect us in a recession and a volatile and speculative asset like bitcoin. I don't think using it as a safe haven during an economic recession is a wise decision.
