I don't think that HODLing is genius in its own right, but easy. The true benefit is to stick with the volatility and not make rash decisions. Meanwhile, the emergency factor has to be taken into account. Someone, who has invested money which he or she may need in the near future, may find that they have to sell at a bad time. So I believe that HODLing is most effective when you have an emergency fund and only invest the amount of money that you can afford to leave alone for the long-term. While this is a case of Bitcoin's historical performance, there aren't any guarantees for the future.

There is nothing wrong with selling your coins in times of need. In fact I feel that there should be a balance between Holding and selling and not obsessive holding. Because the people who are needing money will spend no matter what but those who are doing well with a stable fiat income can rather hold their bitcoins till dire need happens.

I have seen the markets for the last 10+ years and I can say that the future looks good. We can never invest in anything if we consider all investments like that. When the basics of bitcoin is strong the faith should be strong too, otherwise your judgement about assets will be poor.
