Police aren't allowed to illegally seize items.
However, if someone else siezes an item and then gives it to the police, the police haven't broken the law. Remember, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, like all constitutional amendments, protects you from the
government searching you illegally. If someone else does it, sucks for you.
This is half of how the private investigator business works.
