Does anyone know if it's possible to NOT send your waves to the lite client and just wait for an exchange and then send the waves directly from our ICO site to that exchange?

Yes. You can rest easy, because your Waves in a safe place on ICO account. Later, you can use address from the exchange where the trading Waves and calmly send your tokens directly to exchange.

And why would anyone send it to another wallet first. Lisk went wrong on that, but okay in the end.

https://wavesplatform.slack.com/You can do whatever you like with your waves. You can leave tokens in your ICO account and come back to them in a few years to send it on exchange. In the near future will be able to withdraw only part of Waves from your ICO account.
