It's really so easy, especially since we're only dealing with small amounts of data here (a typical wallet is only a few MB).

Encrypt your wallet (either with your Bitcoin client if it supports encryption, or with free solutions like 7-Zip or TrueCrypt) and email it to several accounts on different email providers (e.g. gmail, yahoo, and hotmail) and/or put it in a Dropbox folder. As long as you remember your encryption password, this way your wallet will be absolutely 100% safe.

And keeping your wallet SAFE consists of two different, yet equally important aspects:

• not losing your data (thus losing your bitcoins)
• making sure nobody else can access your data (so they can steal your bitcoins)

There is no 'bitcoin account' whatsoever. Just install one of the common clients (I personally prefer MultiBit, but most people stick with Bitcoin-Qt which is kinda 'the standard', based on Satoshi's original software) and there you go. You won't have to register anywhere to use bitcoins.

Well, some websites offer online bitcoin wallets, and obviously you'd have to register there to use them, but I wouldn't easily trust large amounts of money with some random site. Especially if it ain't necessary. The less people, companies or websites you have to trust, the better.

If you want to buy bitcoins with €uros or dollar$, register with an exchange. I personally prefer intersango.com, great service, fast, trustworthy, easy, and no need to register all sorts of personal details (in fact all you need is just a random email address).

You can just randomly generate an address, or use the initial one that gets generated by default, and use that to receive bitcoins immediately. As long as you have the private key for it (well, your Bitcoin client takes care of that, storing your private key in your wallet file) you can spend any bitcoins that get paid to that address.

btc has official currency. you can check it on mtgox.com. right now it's around 5.2 but depends on how low you are willing to buy or sell. or how high.

How do you mean 'sit on them', how/where do you store the private key for the money on that address?

In my head. It is a "brainwallet," a.k.a. the private key is generated from a string of letters or numbers I come up with, such as "I love my dog and my cat also" or "il0vemyd0gandmycata150". anything works. I do it by going to bitaddress (I have it saved as am html file on my computer in case something happens to the website), and I click on "wallet details." When it asks for your private key, I just type in some words that I know I can remember. It then asks if I want to generate a private key from the phrase, and I say yes. Then it gives me the public and private key that is generated from the seed.

Ah, all right! Wasn't aware that bitaddress.org is capable of this. I tried it with some test strings, but apparently they were too short cause it just said "this is not a valid private key" (thus I assumed it only took existing private keys). With sufficiently long strings however (at least 12 characters apparently), it does accept them as passphrases. Nice!
