We used to put these on strings as kids and smash them against each other until the only one left on a string was the winner, I soaked mine in varnish once but it didn't help.

Hang on to  your nuts!  The sun unleashed a few solar flares today one of which was an X class and the others M-class.  Apparently this caused a coronal mass ejection which is headed for earth and scheduled to arrive on New Year's eve.  That would be a nice way to ring in the New Year!  Fingers crossed for clear skies and good timing.   Presently, the predicted arrival is 0500 UTC on Dec 31 which would be the worst possible arrival time for viewing in Europe but it is just a prediction.  The timing could change as it approaches earth.
