When you first download a wallet and it syncs with the network you should always encrypt it. So when you stake you will need to unlock the wallet to stake, when your coins are mature they will start to stake. Coins can take a few hours to 24 hours to stake, not 100% sure how long ethd coins take to mature but I think it's around 8+ hours. Yes by having the wallet open and staking you are helping support the network and in return you will get staking rewards paid in the coin you are staking, in this case ETHD coins. You will earn 10% per year on your ETHD coins you stake.

You're welcome, I believe you will at least need 1 coin. Like I said I'm not 100% sure when coins mature but going by my own coins it's around 8+ hours before your coins are mature and ready for staking.
