I've just tried and it synced fine, so it has to be issues on your end. How long did you let it sync ?

As for "other hardware" is concerned... as an engineer I can guarantee you that ASIC or special dedicated hardware can be made for each and every algo ever made.
I have always thought that although I lack the knowledge to verify it. Good to hear it from you. Is the only way to change the protocol after a while and make ASICs worthless if they took over control?
