A mobile device a totally different beast to a PC. I have run exclusively linux-based OSs for almost a decade now and can be fairly confident that any system I install is clean upon installation. To do the same on a mobile device I don't think there is any way other than by voiding your warranty. Iphone - no. Windows Phone - no. Android - no. Although Android is open source all manufacturers and some operators install their own skins on devices, and come with GApps installed, which are not open source. Of course being open source does not guarantee it is 100% secure, nor is closed source a sure sign of malintent, but I just want to illustrate that we are not dealing with PCs here, where more control is possible. An unofficial app can shun all responsibility but an official app probably doesn't have that luxury.
As I said, it's about finding a compromise that you individually are happy with - degree of insecurity vs hassle. You can stuff linux onto an android phone if you really want to, but you're still using closed source hardware to run the whole shebang on...
There isn't a one-stop shop or one-click solution to keeping you safe from MI6/Mossad/NSA, whoever. But you can certainly escape your greedy ex...

I agree with what you're saying to a certain extent but I think for the average smartphone user the risk would not just be from MI6/Mossad/NSA etc, installing almost any app could potentially put them at risk. I don't play too many games myself these days, but I can imagine plenty of 20-35 year olds do. How many are open source? I'm not talking about tic-tac-toe or sudoku.
I've seen it mentioned before that it's probably a good idea to treat a mobile wallet like you would your normal wallet, taking only the cash you expect to spend plus a little more. I think a dual-boot system with digital cash on the everyday ROM, a "current account" on the clean ROM and savings in cold storage doesn't seem like too bad a plan. I'm still looking forward to the day I can pay for a small island using just my phone though, instead of having to lug around the laptop to seal the deal. Of course the DRK price will probably have to go up a fair bit before that could happen anyway.
