I think you're exactly wrong.

BTC is a dog slow antiquated joke of a currency that is going nowhere. It's far too slow, clunky and limited to be of real use to the masses.
Banks with all the free money to burn that it takes are building their own blockchain solutions, and they're not going to be taking bloody years about improving the original model.
BTC ETF voodoo will be at best a brief blip on the charts as the final few drops are squeezed from the diehard cryptognat zealots.
I think the banks need the untrusted network that BTC provides. Without that, well, they'd have to build a network amongst themselves, and I'm not sure if they'd trust each other that much. I mean, if you think about it, the biggest banks could cheat, and they'd probably have 51% + if they wanted to, using coordination from affiliated banks, so ... I think the network is what is the most valuable, even in BTC
