His legal trouble started with the release of his book
No, that's just one of the latest in a long series of bold lies from him. The reality is that his indictment was before the book, and the legal issues began years ago. His case had already been fought up to the
US supreme court (which punted the case almost two years ago) before he hired a writer to write upr/btc disinformation so he could put it out under his name.
It sure looks to me that he put out this otherwise worthless book (which adds absolutely nothing couldn't have read on rbtc) specifically to create a indisputably false narrative that tax evasion charges were retaliation. This is a particularly selfish lie because to save his own skin he's fabricating support for a huge lie about Bitcoin.
The reality is that even internet randos noticed the tax evasion years before: ver posted a picture of his exit tax cheque and also bragged about his holdings... not everyone is cursed with innumeracy, but if that wasn't enough Ver's "passports for Bitcoin" site seemingly advocating renouncing to evade gains taxes was probably a bit of a tip-off.
In any case, you don't have to support US tax policy to disapprove of a selfish liar trying to toss Bitcoin under a bus to save himself from the easily predicted consequences of his choices. (To be clear: saying the consequences were easily predictable is not a statement of approval or disapproval.)
My favor irony in this is for all Ver's howling about sekret guberment agents is that he's represented by Steptoe-- a lawfirm well known for being connected to US intelligence, opposing the public's access to encryption during the crypto wars, revolving door with the agencies, etc. I dunno what it is with the people who are most overwrought with baseless "government agents" allegations so frequently find themselves aligning with people and organizations where the relationship is indisputable.
Perhaps when he loses his case, he'll "discover" the firm's connections and past and then weave that into the narrative.
This is also not a new approach from him either, -- after he was charged in relation to his explosive adventures he tried to claim it was all really retaliation by the government because he made comments criticizing the governments handling of waco.
