Over $9 billion worth of Bitcoin. More than 80,000 Bitcoin.

Anyway, that man/woman is a legend, whoever he/she is. I'm sure he/she's got more than that and had probably sold some earlier, but if he/she didn't, his/her hands are worth emulating. Especially if you don't have much or a mere employee but has more than 80,000 coins sitting in your wallet, anybody could have sold at $20,000, $50,0000, $70,000. But he/she kept on hodling.

This legend is teaching us a lesson on how taking profit should look like. To those who bought at $90,000 or $100,000 and target $120,000 as selling price, you're probably doing it wrong.

Or maybe he just had a huge net worth in other assets: real estate, stocks, commodities, etc. What's clear is that someone who's poor and struggling to make ends meet couldn't have held out that long without selling anything. But as for his other wealth, if he had other bitcoins we don't know about or other types of assets, we can only guess.

That whale did not sell 80k BTC directly to the market but through Galaxy Digital. A US based digital asset management company, and which means they can know the identity of the seller. But perhaps there was an agreement between them so there is no information released yet to tell us who the real seller is. But through that, we can rule out the possibility that the person is definitely not Satoshi. Satoshi won't come out and reveal his identity just to sell 80kBTC.

That whale could be an early miner or a wealthy person with a huge fortune, or a whale with a lot of bitcoin wallets.

I'm curious about the identity of the person who sold this. Like, they really have personal information on this person, right?
And I am also curious, is it dangerous to sell this huge amount of Bitcoin to an entity like Galaxy? Like, how confident you are that your privacy is safe.

Why would anyone trade a hard form of money for unstable, risky fiat currencies that depreciate by several percent each year? I mean, sure , if you need to buy a house, a boat, or a plane, or pay for something significant, it makes sense to convert a larger amount. But to sell an appreciating hard money asset for inflationary fiat currencies? That clearly shows the person still hasn't understood Bitcoin and doesn't know what they're doing , even after holding btc for years.

This story is fascinating on so many aspects.
One important detail: it has been confirmed that the 80k BTC recently moved are those being sold over the last few days?
It’s just a coincidence, or there are some heuristic based evidence from chain analysis?

I bought the dip and asked an AI if whales would recover the price by NYC open on Monday. The response was TDLR, but one line from her conclusion sums it up: "...the price is more likely to stabilize or see a modest recovery by Monday..." I have already made over CA$500 on this dip. My best dip this year was after the inauguration in January where I made over CA$4700 by the end of the week.

Another possibility is someone had lost their password or hard wallet and finally had the technology to recover it. It could have also been after a death in the family and a younger member found a way to access it. A 14 year old family feud of heirs could finally been settled with the death of one of them. It could have been  a skilled hacker using brute force software that somehow clicked after years. Hopefully we will hear in the next while. It is hard to spend that many billions of USD without getting noticed. Has anyone seen the 1983 Superman III movie with Richard Pryor in it? Hacker gets rich, buys a Porsche, and the hacked company notices the Porsche.

You're right. This person must be a wealthy person and an investment OG who understood Bitcoin and investment properly.He/she isn't a novice when it comes to investment like this that involves long-term goals, and upon all the market tension, when during the bull/bear market seasons he held tight, big lesson learned. Also, I'm thinking that this person did not only have this 80 000 BTC in his/her Bitcoin possession to sell this very number/amount of Bitcoin.

Maybe it's a matter of discipline, maybe some of the other things mentioned in this thread - and I wouldn't be surprised if one day we find out that this person may have forgotten their password or misplaced their backup. However, for all those who find such stories inspiring for the future, to one day become billionaires with the help of Bitcoin, they would have to invest millions in it today.

Besides, the fact that someone sold 80k BTC or ten times more shouldn't be that important. People have the right to do what they want with their property.

Some hypotheses suggest that those 80000 BTC may be linked to the MyBitcoin service hack back in 2011. If this is true, then the question arises what was Galaxy's interest insuch deal. I believe it was OTC deal  and they likely conducted the preliminary check on the source of the funds involved which could have been set up as "dirty" one. Murky transaction as for me.
