That's possible. This possibility is high considering that they specifically targeted the cold wallet. It's a small item and easy to conceal, it would be hard for anyone to identify it as something valuable unless they already knew at the very beginning of what they are looking for and had a prior information about those victims.

Another possibility is that the robbers might have enough knowledge with cryptocurrency. If they happen to notice that the victim has the cold wallet and they immediately recognized it, they must have assumed that it contains a large amount if Bitcoin.

The article said one of the suspects was a business associate of the victims. My guess is that the victim did some crypto transactions with one of the suspects, or he told him that he's into crypto. That was how they knew about his Bitcoin stash and came for it, which eventually resulted to the death of four persons. The story had nothing to do with a data leak via centralized exchange.

That's what everyone needs to do. I don't understand why some people think it is going to make them look cool if they flex about how much money they have or how much money they make. It might impress a few people who only care about money and richness, but it is going to attract more negative energy than positive, which is why it is not an ideal thing to do. Whether you earn $1m a month or only $500, it is for you to know and no one else needs to be aware of that. Even if you have saved up quite a good amount of money, you don't need to disclose that to anyone.

You mentioned about how even family members can't be trustworthy sometimes, and it is so true. We often hear stories about blood relatives like brothers or sisters killing each other or fighting against each other only for money and resources, which shows that you can't really trust anyone when it comes to such things. If you have bitcoins or any cryptocurrencies in your portfolio, you should work on growing that, try to make it more, but keep it to yourself, it should be your little secret.

Because I'm pretty sure there're still some basket mouths out there that are saying out their investment dealings to the public just to be seen as a wealthy person and only God's knows who they're trying to impress. However, the other day in my neighborhood they picked up a guy that i believe to be into bitcoin stuff. And guess what, after some few days the guys was demanding for a huge sum of about $5000 from the family. This person I'm talking about is a kind of person that love showing off, most of his phone conversations is mostly about crypto, and who knows this actions of his might has prompted or instigated the kidnapping who knows.

So in essence, privacy is the most important in this crypto business, because a single misplaced information can cause someone his live and I pray no one should experience that.

This is nothing new, we have heard stories of this before. I'm just disappointed in those people who have refused to stop posting about their Bitcoin investment after learning how people have been killed simply because they were suspected of having a large amount of money in Bitcoin.  As for me, nobody in my family knows that I'm holding bitcoin, I decided to hide my Bitcoin investment from them for security reasons.  Trusting anyone, even a family member is at your own risk, and it's no longer news that family members now betray one another for their own selfish interests.

How dumb and heartless can criminals and scammers truly be because after killing the owners of the wallet, how then do they expect to get access to the wallet? Is that not stupidity in the highest form?
Privacy and security discussions can't be overemphasized because there are always an arising reason to be cautious not just online but also offline and that is why I don't even blame most of these guys that hire personal security for their  daily activities because the world is growing very evil everyday and our safety and security shouldn't be compromised for no singular reason

The person who orchestrated this attack is his business associate, who clearly knew about his crypto investment. He hired someone else to assist in this murder, and it turns out the culprits have been caught. The victim here is a musician according to the reports, and it's not like he boasted about his investment in public. It turns out you cannot even trust your business associates when it comes to these investments.

Like I said before, I think this particular story goes a bit beyond a regular case of privacy breach. There are so many possibilities because it turns out that the suspect and two of the victims were all business partners, while the other two were the main victim's wife and daughter. In business related matters, anything can be involved, especially when it comes to finances.

But again, I think a lot of people can learn from this story, especially when they clearly have no reason to disclose their Bitcoin holdings to others. There's absolutely no need to try to prove a point at the expense of your own security. One major thing that comes with self custody is financial privacy, and that privacy must be respected even by the same person practicing the self custody.
