Just in china you can buy directly with CNY. You can also find information on where XEM is traded at coinmarketcap.com

As you are new to crypto, just invest what you can afford to loose, just as a important sidenote in general about investments.
But you should be fine with XEM.

I sold about a million NEM at 390 sat  Made a quick profit. So far with altcoin trading made about 0.9 btc after some losses. Will buy back into NEM after price lowers back to 330ish area. NEM FTW!!!
