Let's assume that it does start becoming intertwined with major businesses by 2020 ish. That would get the hype train from hell rolling, though that isn't necessarily a good thing, hype + genuine widespread usage just might do it.

We're getting multi hundred million dollar and more market caps for totally useless things that do nothing but promise stuff. NEM's delivering in its own quiet way.

And Bitcoin is likely to be considerably larger itself by then. There are possibly going to be quite a few projects around that level by then. I'm sure there's room for a non crappy one in there somewhere.

NEM community has been really wise at launch.
We kept lots of coins in funds for future developments.
This is why you still see big concentration at the top of richlist.

Nowadays there are bounties distributed for debugging mobile wallet, writing blog articles and running supernodes.
There is plenty of coins to allow continuous development for years and years.
Even if quite successful you can still consider NEM to be in its infancy
