There was indeed a hard fork due to the instability in the old blockchain.

A swap period occurred about a year ago now, the old coins are unrecoverable in both cases.

The reason why a limited swap period occurred is because of the instability issues with our legacy blockchain and it was becoming impossible to maintain it, therefore creating an inability to track legacy coins.
