It's retarded. Ripple has 100B coins total. The majority of them are locked up with the founders and/or held for charity or some BS. Coinmarketcap by default lists Market Cap based on "available" coins which in the case of PoW coins is how many coins have been mined, or PoS coins as how many there are in total.
For some unknown reason, Coinmarketcap did a weird thing with Ripple where they decided how many are "available" not the total 100B but instead some 10B (? - I can't remember exactly). Then a month or two ago, one of the Ripple founders announced that he was cashing out and selling his XRP. So now the amount "available" according to Coinmarketcap is 28B due to that douchebag's announcement. Thereby roughly tripling the "Market Cap" of Ripple. I can't believe that this did not negatively impact the price, although it tells me that maybe the market is actually valuing Ripple at its full 100B coin level and therefore believes that Ripple is actually worth some 600 Million USD.
