How far out of the loop does Morgan Stanley have to be to publish such an out-of-date article?
Might start?! The Bahamas released the Sand Dollar in 2020; Nigeria released their eNaira last October, Sweden has been experimenting an E-Krona for a couple of years now while China has already implemented and is currently in the pilot testing phase of their digital Yuan - recently rolling it out in 12 more cities. Central banks of Japan, Canada, Switzerland, the EU and England are jointly studying whether to release a digital currency. India, Russia, Brazil have committed to CBDCs... even that doofus, Senator Elizabeth Warren, in the USA is advocating for a CBDC now. In short, "crypto" already is a currency and its use is becoming more widespread.
What might have been a better article is how all these separately designed CBDCs running on their own proprietary blockchains
could start to become problematic wrt interoperability. I think the only answer is Bitcoin
