Swimming is an exercise likewise pushups. Keeping fit daily is everyone's wish and that is why we engage in every exercise. To some extent, swimming is more tactical and requires more mastery which is why it is good that you engage in it at least once in a while to help you get better at it. I don't know how to swim, probably because I didn't grow up in a riverine area and/or also because of the phobia my parents created in us to scare us away from getting too close to the river because of fear of loosing anyone, haha. There are many exercises I always wish I could do which Swimming champions the list. If I still have the opportunity, I would develop my skills for swimming order than just being in a poolside.
I have learned about the different strokes in the book, maybe one day I will also exactly as it is written.
Swimming in a river can be much more challenging in terms of locations that there is current and no current, and the water tends to be colder in a river, too..
Learning from a book might not be practical unless it is giving you an order that starts from the beginning, since learning strokes is more advanced after you learn various basics of swimming.
I think that learning swimming would involve leaning breathing exercises first and learning how to float. . so that you likely learn the breathing exercises in shallow water first, and you also would learn the other basics of swimming in shallow water - maybe water levels that are up to your chest-line... and yeah the breathing exercises might start out with bobbing and then maybe you get to a point where you are breathing while moving, so breath in when your head is out of the water and breath out when your head is under the water. Goggles help, too... just so you can see while you are learning and getting used to how to breath.. and then how to breath and float... which maybe treading water and backfloat are helpful things to learn in the earlier stages.
Of course, swimming under water can help with breathing too, even though there is likely a tendency for too much holding of breath with swimming under water, so if there is swimming underwater that involves ongoing breathing and without touching the bottom then you pop your head up and breath and then breath out when you put your head down while keeping moving in one direction without touching the bottom, so that would be an exercise that also helps with learning breathing techniques while continuing to propel yourself in one direction. and then later you can add more sophisticated strokes...
Of course, swimming is way more cardio and probably not very much resistance training like pushups.
Swimming in a river sometime will give the best cooling of the body, when your body is full of heart because the river is always cold at all times, and talking about current in the river it is something else because i can remember when i jump into a shallow river surrounded with enough current, so unlucky to me i don't really know that the current was so strong to the depth of the river, i really see something that day, from that day i don't underestimate any current in the river no matter what.
Talking about learning how to swim in book, it is not bed idea because it will serve as guidance to you but i will not advise you to go shallow side of the river but you should be at side were the water in river reaches your chest then within you can learn how to float in water because that's the primarily stage of learning how to swim and secondary stage you will learn how to breathe and swim under water, once you master this two stages then some other basic aspects of swimming can be learn as you proceed consistently with your swimming skills.
I so much enjoy everything that's related to swimming because swimming exercise help to be sweet and interesting when you know how to swim, so swimming in a swimming pool and swimming in a river they are two different things all together because in a river you see and observe so many things while swimming and swimming pool not to see because the water is starganate in nature since it is Man made.
